Residential water license applications for Sakinaw Lake- procesing Update

In response to an enquiry on the status of our registered license application, submitted May 26, 2011,

Kym Johnson, Water Information Technician, Water Allocation, South Coast Region
Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Surrey advises in an email 26 Sep 2011 that:

"At this time we have no staff working on the licences for Sakinaw Lake.

I see that the works are constructed, at this point, just continue using the water.

We hope to have the licences worked on at the beginning of 2012 and issued before the summer months."

Water licence update

The Sakinaw Lake Community Association (SLCA) Board sent a letter dated July 7, 2011 to the Ministry of Environment (see attachments below) detailing our concerns with the process to date and outlining our position on the Sunshine Coast Regional District's (SCRD) application to draw water from Sakinaw. As the June 30, 2011 window for water licence applications to predate the SCRD licence has closed, we expect the Ministry to make some decisions. We continue to advocate our position while the SCRD is moving forward with preparations for a pump station.

Last chance to apply for a water licence - June 30

In a letter dated March 25, 2011, The B.C. Ministry of Environment (MoE) updated the status of the Sunshine Coast Regional District's water licence application and set a cut-off date of June 30, 2011 for all property owners on Sakinaw to apply for a water licence for individual water users. The MoE has agreed to accept and process all applications received after the SCRD applied in December 2006 and make the priority date effective the same date as that of the SCRD.

Seeking Landowners to participate in Turtle Stewardship Program

Michelle Evelyn and David Stiles from the Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project are looking for Sakinaw landowners to sign up for free for their stewardship program to protect the Western Painted turtles. When you join the program, you sign a voluntary stewardship agreement. The Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project agrees to visit the property and provide an assessment of turtle habitat on the land; and provide ongoing support, information and guidance to the landowners about how to maintain and enhance turtle habitat on the property.

Pender Harbour Aquatic & Fitness Centre to remain open through mid-July

The recently renovated Pender Harbour Aquatic and Fitness Centre will remain open this summer until July 15. In past years, it's been closed from mid June to mid-September but the SCRD approved its extended hours this year. The centre is located in Pender Harbour Secondary School on the Sunshine Coast Highway just past the Petro Canada. It includes a 20-metre lap pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness studio and a weight room. Effective June 13 to July 15 the pool and weight room will be open 7:30am-12:30pm and 6-9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Turtle babies

Along with the blooming flowers and the singing birds, another wonderful sign of spring is the tiny turtle babies emerging from their underground nests! The Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project is seeking assistance from Sakinaw Lake residents. If you see turtle hatchlings or emergence holes please contact Dave and Michelle at 604-989-1007. Your information helps us to identify nesting habitat and monitor the success of this precious endangered species. The attached form includes photos of hatchlings and their distinctive nest holes.
