Letter to DFO calling for dedicated funding for Sakinaw sockeye recovery

The SLCA Board has sent a letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada asking for a multi-year recovery action plan for the Sakinaw and Cultus Lakes Sockeye salmon and multi-year designated funding for this. The letter also includes a historical backgrounder on the Sakinaw Sockeye.

The coho run this year was approximately 80 in Mixall creek and 20 in Haskins creek. Certainly not a great return but not a disaster either. We will be looking at adding more rock and wooden weirs to increase the creeks spawning capacity. This is a great potential summer resident volunteer project if there is any interest?

The Sockeye captive brood adults at DFO Rosewall hatchery should produce over 500,000 fry for the lake this June. The predicted adult return is between 100 - 400 adults this year.
